This is the latest version of Premiere Pro BenchMark that supports PPBM6, 7, 8, 9 for CS6, CC, CC 2014 and CC2015.  Unfortunatey since my dear friend Harm passed away I find it impossible to update and keep current this website by myself.

It is designed to be a portable, repeatable, and easily reportable hardware evaluation tool. It will allow you to optimize your Premiere Pro hardware configuration and give you solid data for optimizing your existing system, upgrading your system, or for selecting a new cost effective configuration.

It tests system setup, CPU and cores, hard disk setup, video card and memory.

Historical Perspective

Bill Gehrke, the Founding Father of the Premiere Pro Benchmark, developed the first version of this benchmark back in 2005, because of the controversial information given on the Adobe forums about what kind of hardware was needed to use Adobe Premiere Pro successfully. To quote him:

Back in the early 2000's when I, a hobbyist, started visiting the Premiere forum all I saw was a lot of opinions on what made a good editing computer with no justifications for those opinions.  I looked around for some benchmarks to justify opinions and really found nothing.  For instance at that point some people were recommending expensive Graphics cards when there were no GPU assisted coding.which did not appear in Premiere until version 5.0 on April 30, 2010.  Therefore since I was a retired computer systems engineer I decided (about 2005) that since video editing needed a hardware evaluation benchmark that could be done in Premiere and hence I developed the first PPBM.  The goal was to evaluate your hardware and compare it to other users and guide new systems for optimal configurations.

Then, back in around 2008, Harm Millaard offered Bill his support to help maintain and extend the - at that moment - PPBM+ benchmark. Later the two developed the PPBM4 benchmark test, still using Excel spreadsheets, changing the tests drastically and adding functionality. Then came the initial version of PPBM5, still using Excel spreadsheets, until that process became too cumbersome to maintain when we reached around 500 entries. You can still see those old day results under the 'Old Results' menu on the PPBM5 website, but early 2011 Harm created the first MySQL database driven website for PPBM5 and is now the driving force for the new PPBM6 website. To quote him:

When I offered Bill my help, I figured that he could use my Excel experience to enhance the results pages. Now, several years later, we still have the same intention, to give users of Premiere Pro a useful tool to evaluate their hardware and help to improve on weaknesses. However, there has been a shift to emphasize the 'Bang-for-the-buck', not a race for the best scores. We want to give our readers an easy to navigate and accessible way to find relevant information to get the most out of their hardware or find where their bottlenecks are. It is a time-consuming task, but rewarding if it helps users. I also have to thank Bill for the opportunity to learn about .html, .css, .php, .js, sql, joomla and the like, to be able to build these websites.

Background

PPBM5 has proven to be a valuable tool in optimizing system performance. Premiere Pro CS6 is a huge step forward and we felt the obligation to follow suit. The new test had to accomodate more tapeless workflows and show even more information for the user, but most importantly, make data submission even easier, complete and consistent.

  • There now are clips of DV, HDV, AVCHD, XDCAM, MXF 4:2:2 and RED 4K material using both NTSC and PAL in this new PPBM6 benchmark. As such it requires a much larger download.
  • The testing timeline has been extended to make the duration longer and the complexity even bigger than it was before. There are now seven video tracks in use, of which one adjustment layer with three effects.
  • Results are presented in a searchable and sortable database format, with instant dynamic graphs to support further analysis.
  • There might possibly be a Mac version, we are looking for beta testers.

Compatibility

We will only accept CS6 or later results. While the test may run under CS5.5 or even under CS5 (we have not tested it!), the difference in caching between the different versions make the comparison meaningless. If you have CS5 or CS5.5, or do not have a hardware MPE capable video card, please use our PPBM5 Benchmark. You can compare your own results with the published results, but we will no longer process submissions.

Warning:

This new test will take significantly longer to run and is only suitable for systems with hardware MPE enabled cards.
If you are not inclined to do so, please continue to use our old PPBM5 Benchmark Test, which is equally well suited to test CS6, but lacks functionality to report some results. The old test of course has over 1200 systems to compare with, while the database with the new test has to start from scratch. So, nobody is stopping you from using both tests.
